Check out what guests are saying about the Backpacker’s Ball:
One of the things on my bucket list was the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. It had been on my list for years, but I decided I would never do it because every time I mentioned it to someone, I would get the wrinkled nose/you want to do what? response. About the time I was ready to take it off my list, I attended the 2015 Backpackers Ball.

I love charity auctions. I always find things I would never have thought of doing and places I’ve dreamed of going, so I bid to try new experiences. When I saw “Two tickets to the 2016 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering” on the auction table, I was very excited. I bid until I won them, and I went to Elko, Nevada in January.

Attending the Gathering involves three days of listening to poetry  and music for at least ten hours each day. It’s a total immersion in those art forms. You laugh and cry and muse and cheer. It’s stimulating and comforting to be in the presence of these ranchers and cowboys who write about the everyday lives they love. They write and sing about the funny things their spouses do while going about their ranch work. About the pain of having to sell your cows because of the drought. About wearing extra bright red lipstick because you are the only woman riding broncos.

At least a third of the poetry and songs were about Montana. Over half the people who asked me where I live responded, “Oh, I’ve been to Whitefish.” So I felt very ‘at home.’ Thank goodness I live in Montana because sheep were involved in the punch line of many jokes, and the closest I’ve been to being a rancher involved sheep.

It was so much fun! Nice that the Ball not only raised a lot of money for our park, also nice that it nudged me into an experience I was almost ready to erase from my list. Thank you!
