What's happening?

On Saturday, August 11, lightning strikes caused three fires in Glacier National Park: the Howe Ridge Fire burning on the north side of Lake McDonald (opposite Lake McDonald Lodge), the Heaven’s Sake Fire burning below Heaven’s Peak (visible from the Going to the Sun Road), and the Numa Ridge Fire in the North Fork area of the park.

As of Monday, September 17, there are two active fires in the park: The Howe Ridge Fire which is 35% contained and the Boundary Creek Fire at the extreme northern boundary of the park, which is 32% contained.

General Fire Information

The Going-to-the-Sun road reopened to private vehicle traffic on Monday, September 17 and can now be traveled in its entirety. Drivers will not be able to stop along the road between Lake McDonald Lodge and the Avalanche Creek developed area. Avalanche is open for day use recreation, including day use areas, restrooms, the Trail of the Cedars, and the Avalanche Lake Trail. Flattop Trail and The Loop Trail are also open.

What is closed?

Lake McDonald Lodge, Sprague Creek Campground and Fish Creek Campground are all closed for the season.
